SSC Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination
SSC Stenographer Introduction: The Staff Selection Commission conducts a Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination for selecting staff for various Stenographers Grade C and Grade D Posts in different ministries/ departments/ organizations of the Indian Government. The examination is conducted in 2 Tiers, First the preliminary examination, Second the Skills Test. Only the candidates qualifying the preliminary examination are allowed to sit in the Skills Test.
SSC Stenographer Exam Notification: The Staff Selection Commission will soon be issuing notification for the Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination 2017. The notification will be released in June’17. It will comprise of complete details about the exam date, last date to apply, age limit, eligibility criteria, vacancies, etc. Online submission of the form can be done through the official website. The exam will be conducted in Sept’17.
SSC Stenographer Admit Cards: Once the online forms have been accepted by the Staff Selection Commission, the Admit Cards of Tier-I Exam will be released online, 2-3 weeks before the commencement of the exam. One needs to check the website regularly in order to stay updated.
SSC Stenographer Exam Centres: A candidate has to mention his/her preferred center at the time of filling the form. In most of the cases, the candidates are allocated the center of their choice; however under some situations when the number of candidates is in excess, then SSC may sometimes allot centers other than the preferred center.
SSC Stenographer Exam Dates: The exam will be conducted in Sept’17 at various centers across the country. The selected candidates will be allowed to sit in the Tier-II Exam, whose date will be declared later. The last date to apply is 15 July’2017.
SSC Stenographer Qualification
The qualification required for SSC Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination is 12th pass or an equivalent degree in any discipline from a recognized university at the time of applying. Anything below Intermediate will not be considered by the Staff Selection Commission. Such candidates will not be allowed to give the exam.
SSC Stenographer Age Limit
- The candidates appearing for the Staff Selection Commission Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination must be between 18 to 27 years of age.
- Considerable relaxation is provided wherever applicable(SC/ST/OBC/PH/Ex-Serviceman)
A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who has settled permanently in India before 01 Jan’1962, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

The SSC Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Examination is conducted to fill up the vacancies of Stenographers for different ministries/ departments/ organizations under the Indian Government, including the attached subordinate offices operating at State/ Union Territory Level.
TIER-1: Staff Selection Commission conducts a Computer Based Exam which is objective in nature. This is also known as Preliminary Exam as it is compulsory to clear it in order to become eligible for Tier-2 or the Skill Test. It is divided into 4 sections. There’s a negative marking of 0.25 in all the sections. The time duration is 2 hours and the maximum marks equals to 200.
The 4 sections under Tier-1 include:
- General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 Questions)
- General Awareness (50 Questions)
- English Language and Comprehension (100 Questions)
TIER-2/ SKILLS TEST: Through this, the typing speed of the candidate is checked. Only candidates qualifying the written examination are allowed to sit in the Skill Test.
- For Stenographer Grade “C” :
- 100 w.p.m
- 40 minutes ( English )
- 55 Minutes ( Hindi )
- For Stenographer Grade “D” :
- 80 w.p.m
- 50 minutes (English)
- 65 minutes (Hindi)
Cut off List/Result
- The tentative date for the declaration of result for Staff Selection Commission Stenographers Grade ‘C’ and ‘D’ Tier-1 Examination is in November’2017.
- The cut off is decided on the basis of:
- number of candidates appearing in the exam,
- difficulty level of the exam,
- number of seats.
- The category wise cut off list is also released by the Commission.
