Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination

Introduction: The Staff Selection Commission conducts a Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination for selecting staff for various Data entry operator posts and Lower Divisional Clerks in different ministries/ departments/ organizations of the Indian Government. The examination is conducted in 2 Tiers, First, the preliminary examination, Second the main examination. Only the candidates qualifying the preliminary examination are allowed to sit for the Main Examination, which is followed by a Descriptive Paper which can be attempted in Hindi or English.

SSC CHSL Exam Notification: The Staff Selection Commission will soon be issuing notification for the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination 2017-18. The notification is released in October every year. It has complete details about the exam date, last date to apply, age limit, eligibility criteria, vacancies, etc.  Online submission of the form can be done through the official website. The exam will be conducted in January’2018.

SSC CHSL Admit Cards: Once the online forms have been accepted by the Staff Selection Commission, the Admit Cards of Tier-I Exam will be released online, 2-3 weeks before the commencement of the exam. One needs to check the website regularly in order to stay updated.

SSC CHSL Exam Centres: A candidate has to mention his/her preferred center at the time of filling the form. In most of the cases, the candidates are allocated the center of their choice; however under some situations when the number of candidates is in excess, then SSC may sometimes allot centers other than the preferred center.

SSC CHSL Exam Dates: The exam will be conducted in January’2018 at various centers across the country. The selected candidates will be allowed to sit in the Tier-II Exam which will be conducted in April’2018. The Tier-III Exam will be tentatively held in September’2018.

Qualification FOR SSC CHSL

The qualification required for SSC CHSL exam is 12th pass having Science as a stream with math as one of the subject or an equivalent degree in any discipline from a recognized university at the time of applying. Anything below Intermediate will not be considered by the Staff Selection Commission. Such candidates will not be allowed to give the exam.

Also, the candidates awaiting their higher secondary result are eligible provided they present a proof of passing higher secondary before 01 Jan’2018.

Age Limit for SSC CHSL

·         The candidates appearing for the Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination must be between 18 to 27 years of age as on 01 Jan’2018.

·         A relaxation of 5 years is provided to candidates of SC/ ST/ Ex-Serviceman/ EEO/ SSCO category (with at least 5 years of military service).

·         A relaxation of 3 years is provided to candidates of OBC category and Defence Service Personnel (with at least 5 years in Defence Services).

·         A relaxation of 10 years is provided to Blind, Deaf/Mute and orthopedic handicapped candidates.


·         The candidate applying for the Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination must be a citizen of India.

·         The candidate applying for the Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Examination can be a resident of Nepal, Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1962 with the intention of settling permanently.

SSC CHSL Syllabus

TIER-1: Staff Selection Commission conducts a Computer Based Exam which is objective in nature. This is also known as Preliminary Exam as it is compulsory to clear it in order to become eligible for Tier-2 or the Main Exam. It is divided into 4 sections with 25 questions each. There’s a negative marking of 0.50 in all the sections. The time duration is 75 minutes and the maximum marks equal to 200.

The 4 sections under Tier-1 include:

(i)   General Intelligence and Reasoning

(ii)   General Awareness

(iii)   Quantitative Aptitude

(iv)    English Comprehension

TIER-2: This is conducted offline i.e. in a Pen and Paper mode. The candidates have a choice either to attempt it in Hindi or English. The paper consists of Application, Essay, Précis, Letter Writing tests. The time duration is 1 hour and maximum marks equal to 100.

TIER-3 SKILLS TEST: It depends upon the post for which the candidate is applying. Not all candidates have to appear for the skills test. Only certain posts require these tests.

Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): Through this, the typing speed of the candidate is checked. It is qualifying in nature. The duration of DEST is 15 minutes wherein the candidates have to successfully and correctly type the matter given to them in English. Data Entry Speed of 8000 key depressions per hour is required.

SSC CHSL Cut off List and Result

The tentative date for the declaration of result for Staff Selection Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 10+2 Tier-1 Examination is in March’2018. The cut-off is decided on the basis of the number of candidates appearing in the exam, difficulty level of the exam, number of seats. The category wise cut off list is also released by the Commission.
