Combined Graduate Level Examination(CGL)

SSC CGL Introduction: The Staff Selection Commission conducts Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL) for selecting staff for various Group B and Group C posts in different ministries/departments/organizations of the Indian Government. The examination is conducted in 2 Tiers, First the preliminary examination, Second the main examination. Only the candidates qualifying the preliminary examination are allowed to sit in the Main Examination, which is followed by a Descriptive Paper which can be attempted in Hindi or English.

SSC CGL Exam Notification: The Staff Selection Commission has recently issued notification for the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL) 2017-18. The notification was released on 16th May’2017. It has complete details about the exam date, last date to apply, age limit, eligibility criteria, vacancies, etc. The last date to apply is 16th June’2017. Online submission of the form can be done through the official website. The exam will be conducted from 01 Aug’2017 to 20 Aug’2017.

SSC CGL Admit Cards: Once the online forms have been accepted by the Staff Selection Commission, the Admit Cards of Tier-I Exam will be released online, by the last week of July’2017. One needs to check the website regularly in order to stay updated.

SSC Exam Centres: A candidate has to mention his/her preferred centre at the time of filling the form. In most of the cases, the candidates are allocated the centre of their choice, however under some situations when the number of candidates are in excess, then SSC may sometimes allot centres other than the preferred centre.

SSC Exam Dates: The exam will be conducted from 01 Aug’2017 to 20 Aug’2017 at various centres across the country. The selected candidates will be allowed to sit in the Tier-II Exam which will be conducted on 10th-11th November’2017. The Tier-III Exam will be held on 21st Jan’2018.

 Qualification For SSC CGL

The qualification required for SSC CGL exam is Graduation or an equivalent degree in any discipline from a recognized university at the time of applying. The candidates are mandatory to have a bachelor’s degree while filling the form. Anything below graduation will not be considered by the Staff Selection Commission. Such candidates will not be allowed to give the exam.

Age Limit For SSC CGL

The age limit is different for various posts of Indian Government ministries/departments/organizations coming under Staff Selection Commission. However, the lower limit is 18 years and the upper limit is 32 years. The candidates must be born not earlier than 02 Aug’1987 and not later than 01 Aug’1999. However relaxation of 5 to 15 years have been granted to SC/ST, OBC, Physically Handicapped, and Ex-Serviceman.

SSC CGL Syllabus

TIER-1: Staff Selection Commission conducts a Computer Based Exam which is objective in nature. This is also known as Preliminary Exam as it is compulsory to clear it in order to become eligible for Tier-2 or the Main Exam. It is divided into 4 sections with 25 questions each. There’s a negative marking of 0.5 in all the sections. The time duration is 60 minutes and the maximum marks equal to 200.

The 4 sections under Tier-1 include:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Comprehension

TIER-2: The mode and nature of Tier-2 is same as Tier-1 i.e. online and objective. There are 4 papers under Tier-2 Exam. They are:

  • Quantitative Abilities
  • English Language and Comprehension
  • Statistics
  • General Studies (Finance & Economics)

Paper (i) and Paper (ii) are compulsory for all posts. Paper (iii) is only for the post of Statistical Investigator Grade II, and Paper (iv) is only for the post of Assistance Audit Officer. All the 4 papers are of 2 hours each and have negative marking.

TIER-3: This is conducted offline i.e. in a Pen and Paper mode. The candidates have a choice either to attempt it in Hindi or English. The paper consists of Application, Essay, Précis, Letter writing tests. The time duration is 1 hour and maximum marks equals to 100.

SKILLS TEST: It depends upon the post for which the candidate is applying. Not all candidates have to appear for the skills test. Only certain posts require these tests. They are of 2 types:

  • Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): Through this, the typing speed of the candidate is checked. The duration of DEST is 15 minutes wherein the candidates have to successfully and correctly type the matter given to them in English.
  • Computer Proficiency Test(CPT): This is conducted for certain posts including Assistants of CSS(Assistant), MEA(Assistant), Inspector (Central Excise) [CBEC], Inspector (Preventive officer)[CBEC] & Inspector (Examiner)[CBEC]. It consists of 3 modules-Word Processing, Spread Sheet and Generation of Slides.

 Cut off List for SSC CGL

The tentative date for the declaration of cut off marks for Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL) is between September-October’2017. The cut off is decided on the basis of number of candidates appearing in the exam, difficulty level of the exam, number of seats. The category wise cut off list is also released by the Commission.
